Description

This is a Mourning Cross from the late 1800s. It is very light for its size. Celluloid is a form of plastic patented in 1870, made from nitrocellulose and, at least in the early days, camphor gum. It became popular for pieces like these because it was cheaper than crosses made of jet (fossilized wood). It's about 2.5 inches high.

We're Offering it with a 1.5MM 24 inch black leather necklace. (Not shown).

Fun Fact! Celluloid was the original motion picture film stock, but was gradually replaced by a celluloid/acetate combo starting from the late 1920's and then completely replaced by the early 1950s.
