Cleopatra, the storied last Pharaoh of Egypt, had a famous collection of precious green gems, and for centuries historians thought they were emeralds. After all, she owned all the mines. But Egypt's emerald mines were essentially empty over a thousand years before she came to the throne, making it more likely that her gems came from the peridot mines on the island of Topazios (aka Zabargad) in the Red Sea. Many examples still exist of massive peridot rings carved with Cleopatra's profile.

Peridot, renowned for its apple to olive green coloring, is now found in several places around the globe, including the San Carlos Apache Tribal Lands in Arizona.
