Description
This 10MM rough dark midnight blue sapphire pendant necklace holds a lot of secrets. We've paired the large stone (a rough AAA-grade cabochon) with a 14K gold-filled over 925 sterling silver setting and a 16 inch 14K gold filled 925 sterling silver necklace. Its star stays hidden only until sunlight, or bright light shines directly on it, revealing a 6 pointed celestial symbol.
While most sapphires (both real and synthetic) are clear, real star sapphires are opaque. They exhibit an optical phenomenon called asterism, and when cut into cabochons and shown in bright light, stars become visible. Stars can be diffuse bursts, a couple of discernible lines, or several lines usually emanating from the apex of the stone. Our stars have 6 vectors stretching out from the center.
Sapphire is a precious stone in the corundum family. Its blue hues come from inclusions of titanium and iron in its crystal lattice. Did you know that not all sapphires are blue? You can find sapphires in black and white, as well as practically every color of the rainbow including: purple, hot and pastel pinks, blues, blue-green, dark green, olive, yellow and orangey-pink (also know as Padparadscha). There are even color-change sapphires that change from blue to violet or blue to green-blue to ochre when going from daylight to incandescent lighting.
Ancient civilizations like the Babylon, Ancient Persia, Ancient Israel and Ancient Greece all prized sapphires. The original Judeo-Christian Ten Commandments – Yes, THOSE 10 Commandments – were supposed to have been written on sapphire tablets. However, since sapphires have a Mohs Hardness of "9" – For comparison, diamonds have a Mohs hardess of "10" – it seems like it would take a really long time to write them down.
Sapphires have decorated thrones, crowns and temples. It's no wonder kings, queens, priests and anyone who ruled by divine right loved them. The sapphire is historically regarded as a heavenly stone, a stone of purification, strength, and wisdom.
