Known as the "Atlantis Stone" Larimar is a beautiful and enigmatic stone imbued with the legend, romance and mystery of the famed lost civilization. Found exclusively in the Dominican Republic, its nickname "Atlantis Stone" comes from a premonition by noted 20th century American Southern mystic Edgar Cayce. 

Cayce was fascinated by the legend of Atlantis and foretold that blue gemstone with incredible healing properties would be discovered in a place where Atlantis once stood. He never saw a piece of Larimar that we know of. The stone was documented by Miguel Mendez and Norman Rilling almost 30 years after Cayce's death in 1974 in Sierra de Bahoruco, though it had long been known to the local Dominican population as "Blue Stone".  Mendez gave the stone a name that combines the name of his daughter, Larissa and the Spanish word for sea, "mar". 

Born from ancient volcanic and hydrothermal activity, this type of silica-based mineral is known as pectolite. There are other types of beautiful pectolites from other ancient volcanos, and some of them are blue. However, none of them match the tidal patterned Caribbean blue and white of Larimar.
