Description
This bog oak Victorian mourning cross was made around 1860 with superb intricate clusters of roses and possibly a surprise owl. Bog oak usually refers to actual oak. Sometimes the term is also applied to other bog woods including yew, pine or cypress.
We're pairing it with a 20" 3MM black leather necklace with 925 silver clasp.
Bog oak is ancient wood that’s been tucked away for millennia in soggy, acid-packed peat bogs. Over time, natural tannins in the wood team up with iron and minerals from the bog to harden the wood and change the wood's color to a deep, dark chocolate.
There was some speculation that this piece is Gutta Percha, vulcanite or ebonite, but it is, in fact, actual wood vs resin.
