This black obsidian comes from Mexico, or more precisely, Jalisco, the same place that produces some of the world's best tequila.
But what is Obsidian? This volcanic glass is created from lava flow with a high silica content rapidly cooling. It's found on every continent and was traded even from the dawn of civilization. In the Americas, Pre-Columbian cultures from the Olmec to the Aztecs used obsidian in trade, daily use and ceremonial practice. They used in the creation of spearheads, knives and arrowheads, among other tools, household goods, as well as beading and jewelry.
Obsidian comes is several colors although it's most associated with black. It's actually available in a rainbow of colors and patterns including: naturally-occurring green obsidian (prized by the Aztecs), manmade yellow obsidian with its lemon yellow cast, aqua obsidian, blue obsidian, "fire" obsidian (the rarest type), lilac purple obsidian, grey, mahogany, blue and rainbow sheen, golden, golden sheen (gold over black), silver sheen, snowflake (white on black), firecracker (white, pink, red). and striped obsidian featuring black and a combination of other obsidian colors.
