n Edinburgh, these brooches were sold in locked booths, earning them the name "Luckenbooth". Made of silver, they were believed to ward off evil spirits and protect children from faeries.

Over time, the Luckenbooth brooches grew larger and more ornate, with inscriptions on the back such as biblical references or the initials and betrothal date of the couple. Some versions were even made to resemble the letter M, known as Mary's Brooches or Holyrood's Brooches, after Mary Queen of Scots.
