Description

This 925 sterling silver, amethyst and Macasite Brooch came into a collection in the early 1970s, where we found it 45 years later. There is a "Sterling" mark on the back. Maker's mark appears to read "MATL TAXCO". If this is the case then the maker is Matilde Poulat.

The brooch is in a style that puts it as part of a resurgence of sterling silver and marcasite brooches from the 1940s and 50s. This resurgence included figures of: women walking dogs, Spanish dancers, faeries, ballerinas, women in hats, woman at vanity mirrors, and people on old-time bicycles. Many are also animals, ribbons and women's accessories like cat-eye glasses or purses. This design, of a Sleeping Beauty or Dream Girl, appears to be uncommon. We haven't found another like it.*
